MOVING: HOW IRONIC

Moving is not a pleasurable experience. Looking for boxes, packing boxes, taping boxes, and moving boxes can make someone sick of boxes. Moving is one of those experiences in life that most people have lived through. It seems that moving is spring cleaning times ten. This process is an eye opening event. It causes a person to see what is valuable and what is worth leaving behind. It might be ironic but moving is an un-cluttering experience. Moving is a time of stress but also a time of adding simplicity to life. In moving you discover the important elements in a home.

Memories are more important than stuff. I found my High School baseball team jersey in my junk. It was faded and still dirty. I did not even know I owned this collectors item. It had the old logo of Horton High and my name on the back. This jersey reminded me of some of the guys I played with, some of the highlights of the games, and the state title that we won that year. I threw the jersey away, it was old and junky, but I was thankful for the flood of memories.

Updating the wardrobe. I have shirts that I have not worn in ages. They are sitting there in the closet unused. I went through my closet and gave away all my unused shirts to a burn relief center in Waynesboro. There was also a ton of shirts, ties, suits, and pants that were out of style or did not fit any longer. I gave up wearing them because of stains or fashion trends. Sometimes we get into habits that need to be removed or updated. This can be for our personal lives as well as for congregations. Congregations become accustom to one tradition or style. These congregations refuse to throw away the traditions that are ineffective or the methods that have no more impact. I gave away my seventies style leather jacket; it was the best yard sale purchase ever, but it was time for it to go.

Moving is an ironic experience because you are stressed out trying to simplify your life.
