Interview with Lorene Brewer—Part I

Can you describe a ninety-three year old woman as bubbly? This term is used for young girls, teenagers, and perhaps college girls, but never for a ninety-three year old lady. But if there was ever an exception to a rule, Miss Lorene is it. On January 19th, I walked into her perfectly immaculate home which was full of dolls on every corner and table, to sit down to interview this wise lady about her countless years as a Bible class teacher. It took us awhile to begin the interview because of the lively conversation about her personal history and Wayne County lore. The warmth, the energy, and love embraced me as I was enthralled to listen to her talk. As I listened to the stories, I realized the joy of the many students that have sat at her feet throughout the decades. Her voice inflection, her facial expressions, all made the stories come alive. You could tell that she has been a teacher for ages. She obeyed the Gospel in 1937 and started teaching in 1940 at the age of twenty-six. She started teaching the first graders and ended her time in 2008 at the age of ninety-three teaching ladies of all ages.

“Miss Lorene, you must have taught numerous levels of Bible classes throughout the years?” I asked. “I have, I started teaching the first grade students, and I taught all the grades up to about the fourth or fifth grade. I taught VBS classes for years. After a while I begin to teach the lady’s classes. In those classes I taught through the entire New Testament.” “That must have been a rich study for your students,” I interrupted. “I am not so sure about that, but I was truly blessed by the study,” Miss Lorene humbly stated.” “In fact I also enjoyed teaching a lot from the Old Testament. I have taught First and Second Kings, First and Second Samuel, and Jeremiah. Probably the book that I enjoyed teaching the most has been the Book of Ruth.” “Ruth is a great book for a ladies class” I said as I was trying to add something insightful into this topic. Probably, I should have kept quiet.
