THE GREAT SIZE OF THE WAYNESBORO CHURCH

Acts 2 records the establishment of the church. On that glorious day, 3000 souls were added to the church. One must remember that there was a Jewish festival of Pentecost taking place during that time. So those 3000 souls would have been cut down by people returning home after the ceremonies. If one assumes that at least 50% of the new Christians left, there would still be 1500 members of the congregation in Jerusalem. There is nothing sinful or wrong about having a large congregation.

Some people state that “they prefer a smaller congregation.” Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but where is the line between a small congregation and a large congregation? Is 25 members too large, or 50 members, or maybe 100 members? What constitutes a small congregation?

At the Waynesboro church of Christ, we do not attempt to keep the numbers down because of our desires for a small congregation. Now we do attempt to keep the warmth and love of a smaller congregation. We work at building friendships and connections that are meaningful and rewarding. But we do not fall into the sin of neglecting the Great Commission because we prefer fewer people at worship services. Imagine how upset Christ would be if he returned to find only a few small congregations because the membership did not want to grow the congregation. The members withheld the Gospel to lost souls because they did not want the congregation to get too big.

The Waynesboro church of Christ has a wonderful number of people. With people, not everyone is going to be friends with everyone else. Since Waynesboro has a good number of people there is a greater opportunity to make friends and strengthen fellowship with one another. But the fact that Waynesboro has a great number will not cause us to shut the door on people who want to go to heaven with us.
