Interview with Bobby Pinckley Part 2

“As you know Bobby, I need all the help I can get. Do you have any advice for a young preacher in ministry?” Bobby reached down to the seat of his large chair where he kept his Bible. “Yes, Matthew, I want to share with you a verse that means a lot to me.” “What verse is that Bobby,” I asked. “It is 2 Timothy 3:16-17.” Bobby read the verse in a quiet stately tone. “Notice Matthew that Paul told Timothy that the word of God is inspired. And notice what Paul told Timothy that the word can do. The word of God can rebuke, correct, train, and instruct. The biggest mistake that preachers make is preaching what Bobby wants to say or what you want to say. “You got that right Bobby, I do not want to hear your opinion” I joked. “Seriously Matthew, when you go into the pulpit bring only a message from God and not from yourself.

Another piece of advice is to be simple,” Bobby mentioned. “We use a lot of words that people do not understand in the pews. We throw around terms like redemption and propitiation and know the meanings, but many people do not. Always take time to explain what some of these Christian words mean.” “I agree Bobby; we sometimes use Christianize on people.” “You are right Matthew, be simple and keep on preaching the fundamentals.” People need lessons on baptism, repentance, and the church. These topics are easy for me and you, but people in the church do not know them. Keep on hitting the basics.” “You know Bobby, the more I preach, the more I realize to be simple and preach the basics,” I said.

Once again Bobby has an insightful perspective into the church. As we take these lessons home with us, we need to remember that opinion is interesting, but it is the Bible that truly counts. Also, as we talk with those who are not Christians, we need to be simple in our approach. The final lesson Bobby gives is important. The basics of Christian doctrine must be understood before we can move onto the meat of the Word. We all need to be studying the Word on our own because just listening to the preaching is not enough to take us beyond the basics.
