The Klan was founded in the immediate aftermath of the civil War by six former Confederate soldiers in Pulaski, Tennessee. Historians claim that in the beginning the Klan’s activities were harmless midnight pranks of riding horses through the countryside while draped in white sheets and pillowcase hoods. But soon the Klan evolved into a multi-state terrorist organization designed to frighten and kill emancipated slaves.
Stetson Kennedy who grew up in a wealthy southern family is credited with helping to eliminate the Klan’s influence in America. The reason that the Klan was powerful was because of the secrecy of the group. There was an air of mystery concerning the Klan. Mr. Kennedy campaigned to remove this fear mongering group from American soil but was unsuccessful. So Stetson became John S. Perkins and joined the Klan as an undercover activist. During his time as a Klan’s member, he learned of the secret terminology, such as affixing “KL” to many words. Thus you would have two klansmen holding a klonversation in the local klavern. Kennedy’s time in the Klan was well spent, he learned of the hierarchy, the passwords, and membership behaviors of the Klan. He used this information to take down the Klan. The best way to destroy a secret society is to make it public. So he used the children’s “The Adventures of Superman “radio show to broadcast the Klan’s secret passwords and codes. Now the information of the Klan was in the hands of children playing heroes and villains. The influence of the Klan was severely hurt because older men do not seem as cool when little children know the society’s secrets. Ultimately, availability of information is a powerful instrument in the world.
Religious cults operate on the same level as the Klan. Many cults withhold information about themselves. Most cults operate in a secretive mindset with only the high ranking officials being in the know. One must always beware of any organization that is not up front with information.
