WHAT PREACHER DO YOU HEAR?

A lot of people have a favorite preacher that they enjoy listening to on Sunday Morning. This minister might be a personal friend, family member, or outstanding speaker, whatever the reason for this minister’s popularity, this individual seems to speak to that particular person. Every Sunday morning that person makes a choice to go hear a preacher that they enjoy learning from. The problem is that sometimes the preacher the person chooses to hear is not preaching a Biblical message. There are various preachers all competing for the member’s ears.

The minister of the Entertainment church of Christ. This preacher does not preach in a church building, but he typically preaches through the Television. All Sunday morning he invites members of the church to stay home from the local congregation and watch an entertaining sitcom or movie. His message is stimulating and moving. Paul warned Timothy about this type of preacher. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires” (2 Tim. 4:3).

The minister of the Box Springs church of Christ. The Minister from this congregation is highly influential. In fact, he calls some members of the church every Sunday morning to invite them to services. These services are not connected to the local congregation, but take places on the mattress. The minister always preaches a relaxing and soothing message to the people. After people listen to this message, most of them state “It was like we were never ever at church. The message just flew by.” There is a verse in the Bible for those who enjoy sleeping over services. “So then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober” (1 Thess. 5:6).

The minister of the Misplaced Priorities church of Christ. The minister of this congregation does not call every week. But he calls occasionally when there is a sporting event or a particular hobby that one wants to engage in on Sunday morning. The minister at this congregation preaches a liberal message of self-satisfaction. He implores people to find God in the wilderness and in the open grassy fields of stadiums. People find the services of this congregation to be intense and stimulating. At their particular congregation the preaching seems to go on forever, but people can attend this congregation for hours without being bored. Paul warns that these men are “Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; and avoid such men as these” (2 Tim. 3:4-5).

On Sunday morning, which minister do you go hear?
