FANS AND PLAYERS

Superbowl season is here. The media will be in Detroit in full force. There will be millions of Americans glued to the T.V. to watch the big game. Seattle and Pittsburg are competing for the title of the best team in the NFL. The stadium will be packed full of fans while the players work hard in winning a place in history. The coaches will be prepared to the best of their ability and the players will be focused on gaining the prize of the champion’s trophy.

You know that the superbowl is a lot like the body of the church. You have players and you have fans. The players are those 20 percent in the congregation that do the majority of the work. Everyday they prepare themselves to serve the Lord and bring home the prize. They are working hard in developing and growing the congregation into what God would have it to be. On the other hand you have the fans. These are the members on the stands. I come to the games but do not participate.

The problem in football and in the church is that sometimes the fans are never pleased with the players. Every time a player makes a mistake or if the fans feel like the player has made a mistake they begin booing. Many times the fans become armchair quarterbacks. The fans feel like if they were on the field everything would be different. The problem in church starts with those who are spectators to the work of the ministry. When the players are working and trying to accomplish the improvement of the congregation there are always some members that are complaining about the ability or tactics of those that are working. Now the fan members do not want to do the work themselves but are more than ready to criticize and point out mistakes of the players or workers in the church.

One time at Hartsville Pike I had to make this backboard for an exhibit for the youth deacons. The backboard was awful that I made. But I asked one of the deacons what he thought. He could have pointed out the obvious but he didn’t. Instead he provided that attitude that all Christians should have. He said “I did not do it and I have no busy saying anything bad about it.” Please in church do not whine about stuff that other people have done for you!
