IN MEMORY OF ALFRED GALLAHER

Last week the nation, the church, and the world lost a great hero. He was a soldier, a teacher, a principle, farmer, and a Christian, but mostly to us he was a friend and family member. In a quiet strength, in a poetic melody, he would speak wisdom from years of experience, but you had to listen. Alfred Gallaher’s name will be whispered in Wayne County for years.

The first whisper will be of quiet wisdom. In 1 Thessalonians 4:11, Paul provides this advice, “And to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you.” The story is told of a young man working with Alfred in the field putting in fence posts. The two of them were quiet for over an hour, then Alfred would raise his head up and say, “Have you heard.” Alfred would process by stating a memorized poem or quote. Alfred had a vast storage of poems and quotes because he was a lover of wisdom.

The second whisper will be of selflessness. Ollie Hall tells the account of Alfred being blown off his feet because of a shell explosion. Alfred was sent high into the air because of the blast. He landed and has he was slowly coming to his senses he was asked, “Sergeant, are you all right?” Alfred with dirt in his mouth and blood all over his head, paused, spit several times to clear his mouth, and then replied, “I reckon, I’m all right!” Alfred was taken to the aid station. When he saw so many men who were seriously injured, much worse off than he, Alfred turned away without accepting aid and returned to full duty with his platoon. Alfred in this story provides a powerful example of selflessness. Instead of being concerned with his own wounds and cuts, he placed others as more important than himself. A selfish man would have demanded treatment; a selfless man went back to service.

Like the wind blowing through the leaves on a quiet morning, the peaceable life of Alfred Gallaher will still stir our hearts with bravery, wisdom, and selflessness.
